This special Kava comes from the kingdom of Tonga. Reserve this one for special occasions. We have a limited supply of this and reserve it for special occasions. We offer the 70% basal root blend and 30% lateral, for a naturally balanced kava perfect at any time.
Basal & Lateral Root
Kava roots can be divided into two main parts:
- Basal Root
- Lateral Root
Basal Root
This part of the root is the stump of the root, which is known to be lower in kavalactones but has a higher kavain content appreciated in the daytime. Higher in starch and is the more palatable part of the root.
Lateral Roots
These are the more delicate roots that grow from the stump. These test out higher in kavalactone levels, but because they are lower in kavain and higher in other kavalactones, they are more relaxing overall. They also have an earthy, bitter taste and a more robust aroma than the basal root. When Basal and Lateral roots are blended, it can create a more balanced experience and be more palatable.
Basal and Lateral Root Blends
- 30% Lateral root - 70% Basal Root Blend
- 50% Lateral root - 50% Basal Root Blend
30%L-70%B
If you harvest and dry a kava plant, separate the basal and lateral roots, and weigh them out individually, you will see that the weights will be divided into 30% lateral and 70% basal. This blend seems to be very popular in Kava bars throughout the day.
50%L-50%B
These kava ratios make for a strong, well-balanced Kava experience. We see this as the most common go-to blend these days and served both day and night in Kava bars.
